Rolling Thrift Store
Prayer to St. Lawrence — Patron of the Rolling Thrift Store:
Heavenly Father,
You called Your deacon Lawrence to serve You with deeds of love, and gave him the crown of martyrdom. Grant that we, following his example, may fulfill Your commandments by defending and supporting the poor, and by loving You with all our hearts. We ask this through Christ, our Lord-Amen
The Rolling Thrift Store project brings material relief to communities across southern Nebraska. We load semi-trailers full of washers, dryers, couches, refrigerators and more. We find a location, typically a building at the country fairgrounds or a vacant building and for two days, from 5 pm to 9 pm on a Friday and 8 am to noon on Saturday, we offer furniture, appliances, bedding, toys, school supplies, religious items and more to the needy in the area. Nothing is priced over $15 and some items are free. Hundreds of people line-up before the Rolling Thrift Store opens, and even more are served during the event.
Long before the Rolling Thrift Store event takes place the staff and volunteers of CSS and the people of the parishes who sponsor the event begin to pray for the success of the Thrift Store. Through our newsletters and stories in The Register we also invite all of the people of the diocese to join us in prayer. We call on St. Lawrence, patron of the Rolling Thrift Store, to guide us in our efforts, we ask God to invoke heavenly blessings on all of us (especially those we serve), so that we might bring His love to each and every person we meet.
This calling that we receive from Christ to care for His children across the diocese through the Rolling Thrift Store requires great preparation. Preparation is, of course, the physical organization of the event and, more importantly, the spiritual preparation that is necessary for each of us to share His Love with those who come to us with their needs. A heart that is not filled with the Holy Spirit cannot share Christ's love with those who come to us in need.
As each community experiences a Rolling Thrift Store, they come to understand how working together to serve the poor, we act as One Body in Christ. Please join us in prayer for the success of upcoming Rolling Thrift Stores.
